MARGARET CAIRNS MIXED TRIPLES
Bowlers from Essex, Kent & London came together at East Hanningfield SMBC to compete
for the Rose Bowl that was donated to the club by Paul Cairns in memory of his late wife
Margaret. Twenty teams were split into four groups of five with the top two teams in each
group going through to the quarter finals.
Woodlands & EH Windmills both qualified from group A with 6 points each while in group
B the qualifiers were Stonyhill 2 & Burham 1 also both scoring 6 points. In group C the winners
were East Tilbury 1 with 6 points & in second place were St Andrews 2 with 5 points, Burham
2 were the winners of group D with a maximum of 8 points followed by O.C.B.C with 4 points.
All the quarter finals were very close games with Woodlands just edging out St Andrews
8-7 by scoring a 2 on the last end, Stonyhill 2 beat O.C.B.C 7-5, EH Windmills saw off East
Tilbury 1 by 8 shots to 6. The last quarter final was between the two Burham teams from Kent
with Burham 1 leading 6-3 after six ends but then dropping a 3 on the seventh end leaving it
all square going into the last end which they took a single to go through to the semi-finals.
In the first-semi final EH Windmills skipped by Barry Hedges raced into a 6-2 lead after
4 ends against Stonyhill 2 skipped by Dave Ashpole, Stonyhill then took a 3 to bring the score
back to 6-5 & with both teams getting a single each on the next two ends EH Windmills went
into the last end 7-6 up & took a single on the last end to go through to the final by 8 shots to
6. In the other Semi Final Woodlands skipped by Peggy May took on Burham 1 skipped by
Trixie Jones, after three ends Woodlands were leading 3-1 & by end 5 it was 5-2, then Wood-
lands took a 1 & a 4 to finally win by 10 shots to 2.
So in the Final the home team EH Windmills, which consisted of Paul Bax, Babs Mo-
rokutti & Barry Hedges took on the Woodlands team of Dave Sifford, John & Peggy May.
After three ends Windmills were leading 4-1 & on the 4th end took a four, over the next 3
ends Woodlands could only manage two singles which left them trailing 9-3 after 7 ends,
Windmills then took the next end with a single to win the game and the competition by 10
shots to 3. This victory means that an East Hanningfield team has won the competition four
times from the five years it has been running. A big thanks goes to all the helpers on the day
including everyone who worked in the kitchen & Margaret’s family who all came along to help
on the day.
