40 Avon County Open Pairs
Sponsored by Warman Leisure Holi-
days, the Avon Open Pairs was com-
peted at the Bristol Bowls Centre in
Bristol with an entry of forty-eight
teams. Avon County has been made
welcome at Bristol and it is now our
home venue, however some players
are not happy playing mat on mat.
Other venues have been ex-
plored at which mats could be laid di-
rectly on the floor but they are the new
academies and sports’ halls, which are
available only during holiday times.
The forty-eight pairs were a lively
lot, with good playing skills, from a va-
Open Pairs Winners riety of counties, one from Belgium and
Chris Willies & Lee Toleman three fiom Wales. (Could that count as
an international?).
Play commenced with the usual round robin in twelve groups, playing eleven ends with two
woods each. Competition was keen with the winners of each group, together with the best
four runners-up going through to the next round.
Six pairs won each of their matches
and, after some quick arithmetic, the signifi-
cant others were informed of their place in
the play - off (taking care not to have two
teams from the same group playing each
other again).
The winners then progressed to play
for the Cup and those who came second for
the Plate. The rest of the afternoon went very
well. Ends were competed for in a friendly
spirit, although it was obvious each team
wanted to win.

Some of the shots in the semi-finals and finals
were amazing and a joy to watch. What a pity
we can’t persuade a television station to come
and film it, in an effort to bring our sport before
a wider audience. They don’t know what they
are missing!
People who enter these competitions
are usually keen and good players who thor-
Plate winners oughly enjoy their bowling. I run out of su-
Mat Chapman & Ed Dyer perlatives to describe the action.
