36 NORFOLK SUMMER ROUNDUP
NORFOLK SUMMER ROUNDUP
All promotion & relegation issues were decided as season ends
and the Summer League Championship title went to the last match
as defending champions Bob Carter entertained Wymondham with
the visitors defending a two point lead at the top. Unfortunately for
Wymondham the two points proved insufficient as Carter repeated
their previous week’s 8-0 demolition of Wymondham in the Sum-
mer Cup Final to complete the league & cup double.
George Clarke, John Turner & Trevor Brown were again in
top form beating Jon Sparham’s triple 21-11 while Jason Woods,
David Lamb & Melvin Woods completed a perfect first half for Carter beating Chris Mann’s
triple 18-15. After the break Brown’s triple won 22-8 while Woods’ triple won 12-10 and
Carter were home and dry with Wymondham having to settle for the runner-up spot. At the
foot of Division One Thurton visited Horsford “B” for both teams last game of the season.
With the teams level on points, and five points behind Kirby Bedon “B”, the reward for
the winner would be survival in the top flight while the losing team would be relegated with
Kirby “B”. The only result that would save Kirby “B” would be a 4-4 draw that would send
both Horsford & Thurton straight back to Division Two after just one season and that incred-
ibly was exactly what happened. Horsford’s Jo Turner, Carol Kemp & Roger Frank beat
John Pidgen’s triple 15-13 while Jenny Walker, Jan MaClintock & Peter Walker replied with
a 13-6 win for Thurton against Mally Kemp, Sue Fox & Mark Tuttle.
With the survival of both teams dependent on the second half result Peter Fox, Carol
Kemp & Roger Frank stormed to an 18-5 win against a Thurton triple that surprisingly re-
placed the talented Peter Walker with substitute John Ford. Margaret Newcome, Kerry
Greenacre & John Pidgen beat Mark Tuttle’s 11-10 to earn the 4-4 draw that sent both teams
down to Division Two and left Kirby Bedon “B” captain Gerald Chilvers breathing a sigh of
relief. In Division Two action Sprowston SSC earned an immediate return to Division One
after clinching promotion with a 6-2 win at Diss Green.
Margaret Poynter, Derek Fuller & Terry Fletcher led the way with wins of 13-11 & 15-
9 that took them back up to the top flight. Anglian Windows went into their last match needing
six points to pip Sprowston for the Division Two title and did just that. Russell Daynes, Diane
Boswell & Mike Boswell delivered wins of 23-7 & 21-7 against Thorpe Marriott "A" and Avril
Walker's triple weighed in with a 14-8 win. With Watton Green already relegated the match
between Horsford "A“ and First Bus was to decide who would go down with them.
First Bus started the match two points ahead of Horsford "A“ and a draw would mean
survival for the visitors. A tight first half was shared with Vic Webster’s Horsford triple winning
13-11 and Bob Oatway’s triple replying with a one shot win. Chris Woodhouse delivered a
14-11 win for Horsford after the break but First Bus snatched the draw they needed as Julia
Cummins, Colin Coman & Bob Oatway beat Vic Webster’s triple by just 16-15. Halvergate
finished their first season in the Summer League twenty-six points clear at the top of Division
Three and unbeaten. Their last fixture saw them beat Framingham Earl 6-2 with Ray Lamb's
triple winning by 12-11 & 27-8. That result left Deaf Sports assured of promotion three points
ahead of Framingham Earl.
Last session defeat for Norfolk Over 60s
Norfolk Over 60s entertained the Essex Friends team at Lakeside Country Club at Lyng
where the visitors won a hard fought match by 57-51 on points after a good final session.
Norfolk Over 60’s started well against the strong Essex side just shading the first session
10-8 on points but outscoring the visitors 83-60 on shots. Kerry Greenacre & Selwyn Gold-
smith led the way with a 19-3 win while Doreen Stearman & Sheila Bragg weighed in with
a 13-5 win. In fact all four pairs games went Norfolk’s way but Reg Wilson, Sheila Redwood
& Jock Pollock were the only one of the five Norfolk triples to win.
