CNM: What are some of the decorating mis-
takes that you notice when you walked into a
home?
Jose: Picture frames on every surface, bad lamp-
shade, little teensy things all over, straggly plants-
--often, one great plant will do just fine. Things
should be put together for greater effect….I think.
CNM: What advice do you have for someone
with a new house to decorate and perhaps on a
limited budget?
Jose:
.Keep whatever you have simple.
. Choose a few select items…table, rug, chande-
lier and a sofa.
. Fragrance and fresh flowers are nice as well, so
incorporating candles (vanilla) is always nice.
.Try a color you’ve never tried before. Something
you always wanted to try. A couple of gallons
of paint are a very inexpensive experiment. It’s
cheap, can even do it yourself and create a lot of
effect with color. Always keep in mind, less is
more.
CNM: Some people are baffled about where
to place color. For example, if their favorite
color is blue, they don’t know if they should
buy a blue sofa or paint the walls blue or order
blue carpeting. Can you comment on that?
Jose: I love when my clients are involved in the
process, or have a favorite color and are opinion-
ated. But tastes change over the years, and that’s
why I like to put color in….throw pillows, chairs
and paint-----All the things that can be updated
and changed throughout the years.
CNM: Can you comment on what you see in
color trends?
Jose: “Don’t really follow trends. In fact, I am
very anti-trend. It gets people into a “dated” look
and I recommend to my clients not to fall into a
narrow style, but to go for a more eclectic look, to
collect pieces they love. I stick to my palette of
pale green, pale pink, pale blue, cream and ivo-
ries.” To me, white is beautiful, it is a look that is
