Lick-Wilmerding High School
San Francisco, CA
Size: 60.000 sf
Completion: 2018
Market: K–12 Education
As a major renovation and addition
to the campus’ main classroom and
administrative building, this project
negotiates the physical constraints of
a tight urban campus with the design
constraints of a historic building that
achieves net zero energy performance
and a LEED Platinum certification.

Lessons Learned
1 The surrounding context may
have changed since the original
building was constructed. Look for
opportunities to connect the new
design with its surroundings.
2 Look at the worst part of the existing
building as a potential location for
a major intervention. We replaced
outdated toilets & locker rooms with a
new entry to the school.
3 Saving a historic curtain wall required
deep collaboration with the design
team, contractor, and city planner to
add an interior acrylic glazing system
to achieve “dual-pane” performance.
