Clinical Sciences Building
San Francisco, CA
Size: 110,240 sf
Completion: 2021 est.
Market: Higher Education
The renovation of the UCSF Clinical
Sciences Building hardens the building
seismically and reinvigorates the
sustainable design principles of the
original design. This transformation will
provide much-needed office space for
clinical faculty and staff, while flexible,
technology-rich classrooms and multi-
purpose spaces will fill the lower two
public levels.
Lessons Learned
1 The thermal comfort, ventilation,
and daylighting paradigms of historic
buildings can yield great insights into
passive design opportunities.
2 Innovative structural approaches can
limit programmatic impacts of seismic
renovations.
3 Engage the contractor early in site-
constrained projects with seismic
connections to existing buildings.
4 Clearly document and define the
extent of below grade waterproofing
and decisions made with the Owner
during the design phase.
