1.1.8) Would you consider teaching to be a half day job, which is the general
perception in society? Give reasons for your answer?
I do not think it is. Teachers have a lot of administration work which they often take home.
A teacher has to plan for each and every single class before they teach which may take
long especially for a first time teacher who does not have lesson plans yet for their
lessons. We also mark most of the learners’ books, projects and tests then enter the
marks in the mark books. Someone who would state that is someone who does not
understand the fundamental principal of being a teacher
1.1.9 Would you consider teaching to be a calling or an occupation? Why?
It is a calling, I realised that it is a calling because if I teach well and I have a good lesson
with my learners I always feel so happy like I just made a difference in someone’s life but
whenever I have a bad lesson I always go back, sit and reflect why the learners did not
understand the work which often frustrates me and I end up having a bad day because
of that. I realised that even when learners did not understand a concept I would still make
time to explain the work to them after school because I realised that I wanted to become
a mathematics teacher to show South Africa learners that maths was all around them and
that they could do it
1.2.1 Distinguish between an assessment -form, -tool and -method.
Assessment forms include baseline, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment
meaning that assessment form looks at the form of assessment that will be used
depending on what it is trying to achieve when testing the learners understanding of the
concept. Assessment tool is the instrument which teachers use in order to assess
learners work. Lastly assessment method are the strategies, techniques, tools and
instruments for collecting information to determine the extent to which students
demonstrate desired learning outcomes. Maybe learners working in a group
1.2.2 Describe briefly the difference between baseline -, diagnostic -, formative-
and summative assessment is.
Diagnostic assessment is conducted by the teacher prior to any form of instruction in
order to provide evidence of the current status of the learning for each learner. It can be
formal or informal and this could be in a form of a preliminary test for example a Baseline
assessment which test the learners pre-knowledge. Formative assessments is the form
of assessment that is conducted while the learning process is taking place and provide
individual learner with feedback for example a class test then summative assessment is
the type of assessment that takes place at the end of the year for a purpose outside the
learning experience for example exams.
