1.1.1) How is CAPS unpacked pertaining the content for grade 12
In the CAPS document most of the Grade 12 ideas/ focusses are building up and
continuing from the grade 11 content and the work relies on prior knowledge from the
grade 11 content. The content is unpacked in such a way that the content with less work
and theories start and the ones that have more concepts and theories tend to follow at
the end. The first term, early weeks focuses on topics such as patterns and sequence,
the topics that go the last term in the last weeks include Euclidean geometry.
1.1.2 How is the CAPS unpacked pertaining to work progression for Grade 12?
Learners in grade 12 still move from one level to next even in terms of understanding. For
instance at the beginning of the year they start with sequences and series which CAPs
clearly states that learners are supposed to complete the work in 3 weeks then they move
to functions and inverses which is also for another 3 weeks and to someone who really
understands the mathematical concepts they would feel like series are much more
simpler compared to function. Therefore the work progression is also building up for
instance learners do patterns, series and sequences before doing financial mathematic
which needs that sequence and series knowledge in order to understand the
establishment of the formulas.
1.1.3 How is the CAPS unpacked pertaining to assessment for Grade 12?
For term 1 – 4 on the CAPS document for grade 12, the assessments are as followed:
Project which is out of 50 marks, assignment which should be at ,east out of 50 marks
and a test which should also at least be out of 50 marks. For the second term an
assignment of 50 marks and examination of out of 300 marks. The third term includes a
test out of 50 marks and a preliminary examination out of 300 marks. For term 4 there is
a final examination comprising of paper 1 and paper 2. Both paper 1 and paper 2 are out
of 150 marks. Learners have test and an investigation or a project throughout the year.
This is known as formative as they primarily focus on testing learners understanding of
the content and also the teachers teaching of the content. At this stage the teacher can
review the learners answer, check what they do not know and try to rectify it. Learners
also write the June exam, trial and also the final examinations which fall under summative
assessments, because they are the ones which clearly determine what the learner knows
and what the learner does not know. Here learners are mostly on their own as they write
their finals and here the teacher can only hope for the best for the learners
