Following the Truth and Reconciliation
Commissions process, many institutions and
Canadian people are trying to find ways to
repair and reverse the major harm that was
done to the Indigenous people. The Mohawk
language course is not a direct decendent of the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but came
about because those that followed these issues
noted that teaching of Indigenous languages
was one of the recommendations of the Truth
and Reconciliation Commission and saw an
opportunity to help.

The land for 5 miles either side of the Grand
River is an area promised by the Crown for
Indigenous people to live in perpetuity. In time
German farmers and other settlers moved into
the area and the land was eventually taken over,
developed and the population grown, hence
why there is a strong German Mennonite
presence in Waterloo, St.Jacob’s and many
surrounding areas.
