Why is it important to eat and
sustain a nutritious and
balanced diet?
Poor nutrition can negatively affect a student’s health and academic
achievements. Without the added emphasis of eating healthy with
already prepared meals from our parents, most of us tend to deviate
from eating nutritiously to finding a simpler and easy made meal: take
out or fast food. By eating poorly, we lose a lot of essential vitamins and
nutrients that our body needs. Many students understand the basic
nutrition that is needed. However, students tend to ignore this
knowledge and make impulsive eating decisions which can lead to
inadequate eating habits and health.

Why do Waterloo students skip
out on eating a nutritious meal?
Many Waterloo first year students have said that after a period of time,
their assigned residence’s dining facilities become monotonous. Yes,
although each residence offers a variety of food choices, with at least one
food eatery changing their menu weekly, students reported that their
choice of food becomes bland and uninteresting. Furthermore, without a
kitchen, most first years are then only able to order on or fast food. With
convenient services, such as, Door Dash and Skip the Dishes, it is far
easier and more convenient to order fast food. It is found that both upper
years and first-year students eat whatever is cheaper and convenient for
them. As a result, most university students gain 4-9 pounds in their first
years of university, coining the popular expression “freshmen 15.”
