howie gershberg minor league pitcher of the year award

The Angels’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year award has been re-named the “Howie Gershberg
Minor League Pitcher of the Year” award after the Angels’ late minor league pitching instructor.
Gershberg joined the Angels’ farm system in 1985 and during his tenure, served as a minor
league pitching coach and coordinator. He served the organization faithfully for 19 seasons
before succumbing to cancer on Nov. 19, 2003. Gershberg’s playing career included stints with
the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants in the 1950’s. He had a passion for the game and
dedicated his life to working with and developing quality pitchers including: John Franco, Chuck
Finley, Troy Percival, Scot Shields, John Lackey and Francisco Rodriguez.
