2018 minor league review
The Angels’ farm system concluded the 2018 season with a 313-438 (.417) record overall. 14 Angels’ minor leaguers were selected as Mid-
Season All-Stars for their respective leagues. Jo Adell was selected as a 2018 Futures Game U.S. Team participant.
SALT LAKE BEES (71-68): The Salt Lake Bees, led by managers Keith Johnson (Apr. 5 - Aug. 5; 61-52) and Eric Chavez (Aug. 6 - Sept. 3; 10-16),
finished with a 71-68 record for a second place finish in the Pacific Southern Division of the Pacific Coast League. The 2018 campaign
marked the first winning record in consecutive seasons since the 2012 & 2013 campaigns. The Salt Lake offense finished the year with a .290
batting average and 1402 hits, leading all full-season MiLB clubs in both categories. The Bees also finished as the PCL leader in home runs
with 173 (ranking 3rd in MiLB) and runs scored with 824 (2nd). A total of 34 players spent time with both the Bees and the Angels in 2018.
INF Jose Miguel Fernandez finished with 119 hits to lead the team. His .333 batting average ranked second in the Pacific Coast League in
2018.
OF Jabari Blash won the Pacific Coast League home run title with 29 homers in just 83 games played. Blash won the PCL Player of the Month
in April after hitting .362 (25/69) with nine home runs and 22 RBI in the first month of the season.
OF Michael Hermosillo became the eighth Salt Lake player to hit for the cycle on May 1 as he drove in a season-high six RBI including one
of the three Bees grand slams on the season.
MOBILE BAYBEARS (66-70): The BayBears, led by manager Lou Marson (in his first season at Mobile) finished fourth overall in the Southern
League South in its second season as the Angels’ Double-A affiliate. The Club produced a 66-70 record, going 37-31 in the first half and 29-39
in the second half. During the first half, Mobile recorded winning records at home (18-15), away (19-16) and against division opponents
(22-18). Chris Morgan, General Manager of the BayBears, was voted the 2018 Jimmy Bragan Executive of the Year.
Mobile pitched their first combined no-hitter since 2013 and second in BayBear history, courtesy of Griffin Canning (5.0 IP), Matt Custred
(3.0 IP) and Ryan Clark (1.0 IP). 16 days later, the club pitched their second combined no-no of the season with stellar performances from
Griffin Canning (4.1 IP), Greg Mahle (1.2 IP), Adrian Almeida (1.2 IP) and Ryan Clark (1.1 IP).
INF Taylor Ward posted a .345 (51/148) average for the BayBears with 51 hits, eight doubles, six home runs, 25 RBI and eight stolen bases.
OF Brennon Lund finished the season ranked first in at-bats (401), runs (63), hits (106), triples (6) and stolen bases (21). He also ranked in MINOR LEaGUE
the top three in games (100), doubles (20), home runs (8), RBI (59) and walks (43). Logged first career multi-home run game and matched
a career-high five RBI in a game on July 6 to help the BayBears over Jacksonville, 7-3.
INF Jose Rojas batted .304 (95/312) with 21 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 36 walks and nine stolen bases. Paced the team in home
runs , doubles , RBI and total bases. Hit for his first career cycle and BayBears first cycle since 2015 on May 11, sealed by a grand slam in
the 8th. Named the Southern League Batter of the Week (May 7 - 13) after going 13-for-27 (.481) with four multi-hit games, his first career
cycle and hits in six of his seven games played in the span.
RHP Griffin Canning finished the season with a combined 3.65 ERA (113.1 IP - 46 ER) split between the Salt Lake Bees, Mobile BayBears and
Inland Empire 66ers. Went 1-0 with BayBears posting a 1.97 ERA (45.2 IP - 10 ER) in 10 starts. Selected as a Southern League Mid-Season
All-Star and named the Organizational Pitcher of the Month in May after posting a 0.49 ERA (18.1 IP - 1 ER) with 27 strikeouts, allowing only
six hits and limiting opponents to a .098 batting average (6-for-61).
INLAND EMPIRE 66ERS (67-73): The Inland Empire 66ers, led by manager Ryan Barba (first season with the 66ers), finished with a 67-73
overall record, going 33-37 in the first half and 34-36 in the second half. The 66ers ranked first in triples (58) and walks (534) in the California
League, as well as led the league in shutouts with 14. Eight players were recognized with individual honors by the California League, includ-
ing OF Jahmai Jones and C Jack Kruger selected as Mid-Season All-Stars.
Inland Empire threw a combined no-hitter on May 2 from Angels hurlers’ Jason Alexander (7.0 IP), Zac Ryan (1.0 IP) and Sean Issac (1.0 IP).
It was the first for the 66ers since 2007 and one of three no-nos in the Angels Minor League organization for the year.
OF Jo Adell finished the 2018 campaign batting .290 (115/396) with 20 home runs, 32 doubles, 77 RBI and 15 stolen bases between Mobile
(17 G), Inland Empire (57 G) and Burlington (25 G). Adell batted .290 (69/238) with 19 doubles, three triples, 46 runs, 12 home runs, 42
RBI and nine stolen bases with the 66ers. Named the Midwest League Batter of the Week (May 14 - 20) and California League Batter of the
Week (June 11 - 17). Played with the Team USA in the All-Star Futures Game batting leadoff, and scored the go-ahead run and a sac fly to
lead Team USA over the World Team, 10-6.
