Matt Swanson enters his third campaign with the Angels after serving as the St.
Louis Cardinals’ Midwest Crosschecker for three seasons (2014-16). He was the
Cardinals’ Northern California Area and Pacific Northwest Area Scout for five years
prior to being promoted to crosschecker. During his tenure with St. Louis, he was the
signing scout for big leaguers Stephen Piscotty, Marco Gonzales, Kolten Wong and
Kyle Barraclough, among others.
Swanson, 36, pitched professionally as a reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system from 2005-07,
compiling 10 wins, a 3.93 ERA and 32 saves in 108 career games. He was selected by the Pirates in the 13th
front office
round of the 2005 June Amateur Draft out of the University of California, Berkeley.
During his time with Cal (2001-05), he became a key bullpen fixture as a junior and emerged as a senior,
posting a 1.66 ERA in just under 50 innings in his final collegiate campaign. The 2005 Cal team included future
big leaguers Brennan Bosch, Allen Craig, Brandon Morrow and Josh Satin.
A native of Los Gatos, CA, Swanson and his wife, Sara, reside in Texas with their two daughters, Abigail and
Leah, and son, Luke.
NATE HOROWITZ
Director, Professional Scouting
Nate Horowitz was promoted to his current role in October of 2016. Horowitz
oversees the day-to-day operations of the pro scouting department, and advises the
office of the general manager on all manners of player acquisition. He previously
worked in amateur scouting, where he assisted in the management of the draft
process.
Horowitz, 30, began his baseball career in 2011 as an intern in the baseball
operations department of the Arizona Diamondbacks, focusing on advance scouting,
the amateur draft, and the arbitration process. In 2010, Nate served as the 16U National Team Coordinator
for USA Baseball in Durham, NC. The Newton, MA native received his bachelor’s degree in economics in
2010 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nate lives in Aliso Viejo with his wife, Jacki, and
daughter, Everly.
CARLOS GOMEZ
Director, International Scouting
Carlos Gomez enters his seventh campaign as the Angels Director of
International Scouting. The Puerto Rican native leads the Halos' amateur scouting
efforts in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Part of Gomez’s focus centers around
the Club’s Dominican complex in Boca Chica, DR (Academia de Abel Garcia).
Gomez served as the Arizona Diamondbacks International Scouting Director
from 2011-12 after joining the organization as a pro scout following the 2007 season.
A former right-handed pitcher, Gomez prepped at Academia del Perpetuo Socorro in San Juan, PR and
played four years collegiately (1998-2001) at Purdue University (IN). Upon graduation with a bachelor’s
degree in industrial engineering, Carlos pitched for three seasons in the Independent League (2002-04) in
Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Gomez compiled a 2-2 mark with three saves and a 4.25 ERA in 56 IP
relief outings. He also played for Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League from 2003-04.
Carlos and wife, Maggie, reside in Orlando, FL.
