MARCEL LACHEMANN
Special Assistant to the General Manager
Marcel Lachemann enters his 52nd season in baseball and seventh as a
special assistant to the general manager after rejoining the Club prior to the
2012 campaign. Lachemann was the Club’s pitching coach from 1984-92 &
1997-98 and spent two-plus seasons as manager (1994-96).
Prior to rejoining the Angels, Marcel worked in the Colorado Rockies front office
organization, including eight seasons (2004-2011) as a special assistant to the
GM. He was also the Rockies Pitching Coach from 2000-01.
The Los Angeles native began his coaching career with the Montreal Expos (1973-75), and then
worked as an assistant coach at his alma mater, University of Southern California, before joining
the Angels in 1982. He served as pitching coach with the Halos until 1993 when he was named
pitching coach of the newly formed Florida Marlins where his brother Rene was managing. In 1994,
Lachemann came back to the Angels, replacing Buck Rodgers as manager. Lachemann held the Halos’
managerial post until resigning in August 1996 and returned as Angels Pitching Coach under Manager
Terry Collins from 1997-98.
Lachemann lettered at USC as a pitcher from 1960-62, helping the Trojans to the 1961 College
World Series title. He pitched in parts of three seasons with Oakland (1969-71), going 7-4 with a 3.44
ERA in 70 appearances. Additionally, Lachemann has been with USA Baseball since 1999, serving as
pitching coach on the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classic teams. During the 2013 offseason,
Lachemann was named Team USA’s bullpen and co-pitching Coach for the 2013 World Baseball Classic
by manager Joe Torre. The former Halo manager teamed up with four-time Cy Young Award winner
Greg Maddux to handle the Team USA pitching staff.
His brother Bill is the Angels Special Assignment Catching Coordinator. Marcel and his wife, Sue,
live in Nipomo, CA.
ERIC CHAVEZ
Special Assistant to the General Manager
On October 26, 2015, the Angels hired former American League Gold Glover Eric
Chavez (sha-VEZ) as a special assistant to GM Billy Eppler. Chavez’s duties include on-
field instruction during Spring Training and scouting throughout all levels during the
season, similar duties to his previous position with the New York Yankees.
Chavez, 41, retired as a player after the 2014 season and spent 2015 as a
special assignment scout under Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman. Also in 2015, Chavez
worked as a part-time color broadcaster for Oakland A’s games on Comcast Sportsnet.
Eric played 17 seasons in the big leagues, spending his first 13 with the Athletics after a first round
selection in 1996 (10th overall pick). His best years came from 2001-06, where he won six consecutive
Gold Glove Awards®, batted .273 and averaged 29 homers & 96 RBI per season. In 2002, he was part
of Oakland’s historic 20-game win streak and claimed the Silver Slugger Award® that season. His finest
campaign came in 2001 hitting, .288 with 32 HRs and 114 RBI (.878 OPS). Chavez collected 25+ home
runs six times and over 100 RBI on four occasions and is lauded as one of the top third basemen during
his tenure.
A native of San Diego, CA, Chavez resides in Paradise Valley, AZ. He has three children (Diego, Dolce
and Cruz).
