Social Development Theory - argues that social interaction precedes development;
consciousness and cognition are the end product of socialization and social behavior.
Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory is the work of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896-
1934) [1][2]. Vygotsky’s work was largely unknown to the West until it was published in 1962.
Vygotsky’s theory is one of the foundations of constructivism. It asserts three major themes
regarding social interaction, the more kknowledgeable other, and the zone of proximal
development.
According to Vygotsky;
1. Person’s interpersonal, or internal processes, have their roots in interactions with others.
2. Emphasized language and social interaction much more than Piaget
3. Proposed that developmental progress occurs through discussion and reasoning in a social
context (language is a tool use to aid development)
4. Soviet Dialectical theory
a. Contradiction spurs development
b. Start with one notion (thesis)
