Other Theories of Development:
BRONFENBRENNER’S ECOLOGICAL THEORY
Objective:
Describe each of the layers of Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model.
Identify factors in one’s own life that exerted influence on one’s development.
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory
Urie Bronfenbrenner - formulated the Ecological System Theory. He was born on April 29,
1917. He is a Russian-born American, died at 88 years old in 2005.He believed that children
need people in order to become human.
Ecological System Theory - also known as Human Ecology Theory. It is the individual’s
relationship within communities and the wider society.
5 Layers of Bioecological Theory
Microsystem - immediate environment which the child directly interacts with.
Mesosystem - connections among two or more microsystem.
Exosystem - indirect environment
Macrosystem - outermost part in the child’s environment, broader culture.
Chronosystem - changes that the individual goes through over time.
