The next phase of our journey to a more fulfilling life requires stepping out of
your comfort zone, yet again. We are going to learn how to be more
assertive. As in previous exercise, it feels a little awkward at first. Try to
remember that you will get used to it and so will everyone else, in time.
The first step in becoming more assertive is, of course, to discern whether you
need to be. So let's first answer a few pertinent questions. Shall we?
Do you often find that others coerce you into thinking their way? Is it
difficult for you to express your positive or negative feelings openly and
honestly? Do you sometimes lose control and become angry at others who
don't warrant it?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions you may be may be an
suffering from a common problem known as lack of assertiveness. In order to
properly diagnose a lack of assertiveness, let us, first define exactly what
assertiveness is.
Assertiveness is the ability to express yourself and your rights without
violating the rights of others. It is appropriately direct, open, and honest
communication that is self-enhancing and expressive. Increased assertiveness
will allow you to feel self-confident and have greater control of your life.
This will help you to gain the respect of your peers and it may also increase
your chances of having open and honest relationships. Being more assertive
in your every day life will improve your decision-making ability and your
chances of reaching for and attaining your life long dreams.
Briefly summarised, assertiveness is the ability to express your thoughts and
feelings in a concise, non-threatening way while keeping the lines of
communication open. However, before you can comfortably express your
needs, you must believe you have a legitimate right to have those needs.
