P. 117

Take a strip and divide it into three equal parts and shade 1 part out of the

               three equal parts as shown.

               Here, total parts = 3; shaded part = 1; unshaded parts = 2
So, the shaded part is one-third of the whole strip, which means that 1 out of

               the 3 parts is shaded.

                                                             1
The fraction for the shaded part is . It is read as one by three or one upon

               three. 3

                                                                    1
               ONE-FOURTH OR QUARTER 4

When we divide an object into four equal parts, each part is called one-fourth

                                                                                                     1
or quarter of the whole object. We write one-fourth or quarter as and read
                                                                                                     4
it as one by four or one upon four.

Take a strip, divide it into four equal parts and shade 1 part out of the four
               parts as shown.

                                        4
               Here, total parts = ; shaded part = 1; unshaded parts = 3
So, the shaded part is one-fourth or quarter of the whole strip, which means
                                 4
that 1 out of parts is shaded.
                                                            1
The fraction for the shaded part is . It is read as one by four or one upon four.
                                                            4

1 Circle the ones that show equal parts.
