        Bottom Line

Only 13.5 percent of North Carolina census blocks are within a half mile of a park. Only 41 percent of North
Carolina’s youth live in neighborhoods with facilities that foster physical activity, such as parks, playgrounds,
community centers, walking paths, or even sidewalks. Lack of physical activity is a primary driver of our health
crisis. North Carolina spends over $50 billion annually on costs associated with lifestyle diseases.
