P. 15

God used the words of the song to speak to Lettie’s heart.
She went to the altar at the front of the church, knelt down and
                                gave her life to Christ.
Charles did not go to the meeting with his wife. But in the
following days, Lettie encouraged Charles to let God be in
control of his life too. A month later, they both attended a
revival meeting, and God spoke to Charles through the
preacher, Reverend Henry Ostram. God reminded Charles of
the time he met God at the altar after his baby sister died. He
remembered how God answered his prayer and healed Lettie
when she was very sick. Charles did not make a decision for
Christ in the church. Instead, when he got home, with Lettie
praying for him, he begged for God’s forgiveness. Of course,
God accepted Charles back. He was forgiven. He was a child
                                of God!

Charles’ first priority in his life now was to live in a way
that pleased God. He prayed throughout each day, “God, what
do You want me to do?” He still worked at the telegraph office
and wanted to tell his coworkers about Jesus.
He was nervous when he first tried to share what he
believed. One day at work, Charles told a friend about Jesus
dying on the cross, but the friend did not become a Christian.
Charles was discouraged. But the next day, the young man
entered Charles’ office and said, “I went home last night and
did just what you told me. It is all settled; I gave myself to
                                Christ.”
That man was Ernest A. Kilbourne. On that day, the two
men became friends for life. They would later form a mission
organization, The Oriental Missionary Society, which is now
                                One Mission Society.
From then on, Charles began to lead many people to Christ.
One time, a baby of one of Charles’ coworkers died. The father
was so sad that he could not work. Charles put his arm on the
