man’s shoulder and said, “I know all about it. I lost a baby
sister when I was young, and my heart was broken until Jesus
comforted me.” The man then gave his life to Christ.
Many of the new Christians could not go to church on
Sundays because they had to work. So Charles rented a room
in a downtown bar on Sunday afternoons. The people went to
pray, sing and read the Bible. Once a month, they gave $20 to
missions and sent encouraging letters to other telegraph
operators all over the United States. They also sent short
sermons, which taught about the Bible and explained the way
to Jesus, to people in other countries.

Charles was normally a calm and gentle man. But one
morning, he spoke mean words to one of the workers. He
couldn’t help himself. He felt badly about what he said. Why
had he been so unkind?
