Warnings, Cautions and Notes
“ Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word. You
are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.”
– Psalm 119:67,68 (NIV)
n the military, equipment comes with a tech manual which
Iincludes instructions on its proper use. In the manual are
warnings—operating procedures which could result in personal
injury or loss of life if not carefully followed; cautions—operat-
ing procedures which could result in equipment damage if not
carefully followed; and notes—operating procedures which are
essential to emphasize.
In the Bible, our tech manual for life, we find warnings, cau-
tions and notes which guide us through the proper use of our
bodies, our minds, our tongues, our hearts, our actions and even
our checkbooks!
Sometimes the cruelty of war can damage our hearts in ways
that lead us to forget that God restores and heals. We might try
to escape the pain with destructive patterns. If that happens,
it’s time to get out the tech manual, the Bible, to see what God
would have us to remember, because asking for help may be nec-
essary:
A warning: Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.”
A caution: Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with the wise
grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.”
