General Robert E. Lee’s Favorite Hymn

“ The firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, ‘The Lord
knows those who are His.’” – 2 Timothy 2:19 (NASB)

ow do you appropriate God’s grace in suffering? How can
Hyou faithfully endure as you live through something pain-
     fully difficult?
Are these two good questions to ask during wartime? Yes. And
the answers can be found in the old hymn, “How Firm a Foun-
dation.” It is no surprise that this was General Robert E. Lee’s
favorite hymn, and it was even sung at his funeral in 1870:

“How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?”

At the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance after the
9/11 attack, Billy Graham used this hymn to remind us that,
even though they were built on solid foundations, the two ma-
jestic World Trade Towers fell. But our lives can be built on a
foundation of trust in God which can never be destroyed.
We do not know who composed the hymn, first published in
1787. But no doubt this person knew, as did General Lee and
     Billy Graham, that “the name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous run to it and are safe" (Proverbs 18:10).

Prayer: Lord, may I look to You for strength because You never fail.

4 Trust God to hold you up, even during difficult times.
