Storms
“ He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and He brought them
to their desired haven.”
– Psalm 107:29,30 (ESV)
urricane Floyd was furiously approaching the East Coast.
HFloridians were gearing up for the hurricane of the century
to hit. Thousands were fleeing from their homes and heading
inland. But much to the surprise of meteorologists and frantic
homeowners, damage to the Florida coast was minimal. It did
however wreak havoc on many unsuspecting North Carolina
residences. Trees were thrown across the road and water levels
caused cars to be abandoned. Damage left many homeless, seek-
ing shelter and food.
Storms can be experienced in a marriage, too. What couple
can see the “storm” waiting over the horizon as they exchange
their wedding vows? All marriages have “storms,” but a military
marriage offers more unique stresses to a couple than their civil-
ian counterparts will experience. A marital storm can hit a rela-
tionship with full force, leaving significant damage and downed
communication lines.
What are the options? Abandon the relationship? Run from
the force of its impact? Swerve around the carnage and stand
firm in the eye of the storm? God wants our marriage to stand
firm as we rely on Him to bring us through the hard times we
face in our military marriages.
Prayer: Lord, You calm the storms. Please help our marriage to be calm
even in the storms as we rely on You as our guide.
Preparing for marital “storms” is the best way to prevent them. 3
