Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)
The Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) completed 2,616 hours of service to the
Cumberland County Community that freed up law enforcement personnel to provide regular
law enforcement services. The VIPS have six specially trained volunteers in Trauma
Intervention who provide immediate, compassionate services
to victims of crimes, trauma and other tragic events.
This year, the VIPS held their Second Annual 5K Run
Around the Otter Ponds to raise money to purchase
uniforms and equipment for their group.
The work that the VIPS do for the Sheriff’s Office and
the citizens of Cumberland County saves over $110,000 per
year in non-law enforcement tasks and allows the Sheriff’s
Office to enhance the services that we are able to provide to our
communities.
Explorer Post #3
A program of the Boys Scouts of America, the Explorer Post #3 of the Sheriff’s
Office is designed to teach youth leadership skills and provide an introduction to the
career of law enforcement.
The group learns law enforcement protocol, participates in community events and
team building activities. The program provides one-on-one mentorships with fun
and relevant activities teaching the importance of social responsibility.
Police Athletic League
The program provides much needed equipment and helps pay fees for schools and youth leagues
struggling to keep programs afloat in this difficult economy. PAL program donated $10,470 to
Cumberland County sports programs in 2019.
PAL awarded scholarships to four Cumberland County high school seniors in 2019. Congratulations
to Noah Bruns of Gray New Gloucester High School, Carlee Richmond of Windham High School,
Benjamin Monahan-Morang of Freeport High School and Kimberly Goddard of Westbrook High School.
