Margaret TATTON-BROWN
Flowers in the Wind, 2013 Ceramic, 48cm x 4cm, £180 Year left 1967
Born in London, Margaret went to the Lycée Français before Calne. After Calne she studied History of Art at Essex University and the Courtauld Institute. She continued living in London and taught at Queen’s College and later at Croydon College of Art & Design. Her teaching there included a history of ceramics course. This was a wonderful opportunity for shared discovery and it was then that she found her individual style, based on layers of slips and underglaze. She works from home in a studio attached to the house. She is a member of the London Potters’ Guild.
“My plate, ‘Flowers in the Wind’, was made from stoneware clay, thrown on the wheel, then decorated with yellow ochre and iron oxide slips and fired in an electric kiln to 1,260oC.
I try to keep the vitality, which is part of the process of throwing, still visible in the finished work. The decoration of this piece was inspired by my interest in maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature, whilst at the same time being aware of its unpredictable force.”
