Case Study

As a guided rubric toward completion- the assignment of six to eight typed pages should,

Pose a problem that has no obvious right answer with in your school environment that

               relates to informatics; 40 Points

I have a problem with the current education system and schools in general. Why are

smart phones allowed in schools? They are not needed in schools. It really drives me crazy that it

seems to be a non-issue in the public-school systems. Why do these kids need their phones in the

classroom, or on the bus? I do not know why teachers continue to allow smart phones and other

devices in the school classrooms daily.

I was trying to teach my class for LITE537 (It took three tries to get it done). The first try

had nothing to do with the students, it was bureaucracy, in this instance, that was my downfall.

The second attempt at teaching my IDP was at the local vo-technical school. I was giving

permission by the principle and the teacher to teach this class. I showed up, excited to teach, and

there were eight kids. Okay, eight is better than zero. As it was, I proceeded to teach my IDP to

these “technical” students, yet, it was a task to get their attention, it was another task altogether,

keeping it. These kids could not, or would not, put their phones down. I lean more towards could

not. As it would appear, these kids’ phones were a permanent part of their bodies and that they

could not function without them. It was very frustrating to me, as I did not want to abuse my

power, I was a guest after all, but really?!? Put the phones away. They might actually learn

something. And it wasn’t like my IDP was a hard or boring lesson. My IDP was regarding

cellphone technologies and its future. Nope, still no interest. I somehow managed to get through

the session in just over an hour and let them spend the rest of the class, which was about seventy

minutes, researching the topic. Two of them, from my observation, did spend some time, sort of,

researching. Three of them could not speak a word of English and the others spent the time
