TYPES OF SEPARATION
Voluntary
A voluntary quit occurs when the employee is the moving party in control of ending the employment relationship .
Generally, an individual will be disqualified from receiving unemployment compensation if he/she quits for reasons
not attributable to the employer . The action of quitting may range from a written notice of resignation to an
unannounced failure to return to work . It is our responsibility to identify the claimant’s reason for leaving and
determine whether that reason constitutes good cause .
Good cause for voluntarily quitting work is such a reason that a practical person exercising common sense would
leave work . Good cause quits may include:
• Health reasons, irrespective of whether they are work related or not . Health extends also to spouse and
dependent children .
• Unsatisfactory or hazardous working conditions
• Unreasonable reduction in claimant’s rate of pay
• Harassment
• Being physically or mentally unable to perform the work or unqualified as a result of insufficient educational
attainment or inadequate occupational or professional skills .
The PAF for an employee who has voluntarily resigned must include:
1 . The actual physical last date worked .
2 . The length of notice provided by the employee .
3 . Complete detail of the reason the employee gave for resignation (if employee gave no reason and/or
notice, the fact should be noted on the PAF) .
* Obtain a written resignation from the employee whenever possible.
When completing a Termination PAF for Voluntary Resignations please indicate one of the following reasons .
