                                   5-number Summary

               1.      Minimum – smallest number

               2.      1  quartile (Q 1) – number that divides the lower 25% of the
                        st
                       data from the upper 75% of the data

               3.      Median (2  quartile, Q 2) – number that divides the  lower
                                nd
                       50% of the data from the upper 50% of the data
                       observations in half

                        rd
               4.      3  quartile (Q 3) – number that divides the  lower 75% of the
                       data from the upper 25% of the data

               5.      Maximum – largest number

                         NOTE: to create a five number summary observations
                         must be listed in order from least to greatest!
                         Box Plots
                         1.      A graph of the five-number summary
                         2.      A central box spreads the quartiles (Q 1 and Q 3)

               3.      A line in the box marks the median (M)

               4.      Lines extend from the box out to the minimum and
                       maximum observations
