programs such as live band performances and actively organize community service and
charity activities. These activities are able to attract the younger generation’s attention. As
mentioned by Mr LE, “Christians organize many musical activities such as singing and guitar
sessions. Eventually, these activities will attract people to join, and they will convert.” This
point was also brought up by Mr LI,” I did try to access the church. The first time you are
there, you will be treated like a VIP guest, you will feel very comfortable… Besides, the sound
system and decoration in the church are very good. The church provides an ideal
environment for Christian youth to learn at least one or two musical instruments and perform
when it’s needed… all these will attract the younger ones to participate and eventually be
converted.”
5.4.5 TCR organizations lacking full-time personnel and specialists (Daozhangs, monks,
nuns, etc.).
Most TCR organizations do not have full-time personnel or specialists to manage their
organization affairs. Without the support of full-time personnel, in particular specialists such
as Daozhangs, monks, nuns, etc., TCR organizations will not be able to focus on
proselytizing their religions. As mentioned by Mr. TS, “My organization’s growth is caused by
the support of three groups of people – full-time staff, monks and volunteers. They are the
keys to make this religious organization go even further.” On the other hand, Madam LA
opined that “the Masters (monks) play a very important role… when the followers have any
query on the teachings, they can straightaway get an answer; if we can have more masters
in East Malaysia and at least one who stay permanently in Sibu, he will be able to help us
grow even faster. Followers will also have more confidence on us.”
5.4.6 TCR organizations lacking financial strength
Many TCR organizations are having financial difficulties. Without good financial standing,
they will not be able to organize activities. Through the activities, they will be able to engage
their members. As mentioned by Mr JW, “My temple has been forced to move out from our
current site… the landlord is planning to develop the site… We have to look for fundings to
build a new temple at another place”. Similar problems are faced by other TCR organizations.
As mentioned by Madam RS, they did try to conduct some charity fairs to raise funds by
selling some goods; Mr TA also mentioned that his organization would use the donation
received prudently. In his view, financially his organization is still far behind many non-TCR
organizations. As such his movement cannot afford to organize activities or events like others.
