Understanding assessment criteria
Within the SBA, written work will be the most common form of work to be assessed Clear assessment criteria and an explanation of the criteria will help you assess fairly and reliably Assessment criteria that is clear will help students understand what is expected of them
Mastery of assessment practices is require knowledge of the various tools and the develop- ment of the skill needed to accurately interpret and apply the underlying rules A rubric is one of these tools
Rubric
A set of rules for scoring the responses on a constructed-response test (one in
which the test-taker writes the response instead of choosing it from a list of sup-

A rubric is a way to grade student work It is a description of the assignment or task laid out on a grid Rubrics can be created in a variety of forms and levels of complexity, but they all:
• focus on measuring a stated objective
• use a range to rate performance
• contain specific performance characteristics arranged in levels indicating the degree to which a standard has been met
A rubric has four basic parts; these are shown in Figure 7 on page 20
