Understanding Rubrics: A primer
Rubrics provide teachers with an effective means of learning-centred feedback and evaluation of student work The rubrics used for the CSEC English SBA are analytic rubrics An advantage of using analytic rubrics is that they provide useful feedback on areas of strength and weak- ness This makes them ideal for formative assessment; use them to provide feedback on the drafts your students submit for review
Analytic rubric
An analytic rubric resembles a grid with the criteria for a student product listed in the leftmost column and with levels of performance listed across the top row often using numbers and/or descriptive tags The cells within the centre of the rubric may be left blank or may contain descriptions of what the specified criteria look like for each level of performance When scoring with an analytic rubric each of the criteria is scored individually

2) Are all elements of the particular rubric clear to you?
3) Are you aware of what indicators to look for (“the standard of performance”)? 4) Do you know what to do if all the standards of performance in a particular cell
are not met?
