Lesson 38

I should like to offer you some useful advice in the

speaking of English. These are not hard and fast rules,
but should give you some guidance on how English is

        spoken in Britain.

        1. English is not a language that is spoken quickly, it is

therefore important to speak reasonably slowly.

Italian, for example is spoken very quickly, but English
        is much slower.

        2. Phrasing - a phrase is a short sequence of words.

Spoken English is made up of phrases that should
blend together to give good flow.

        3. Using a pause. The pause is a very powerful part of

spoken English, as it heightens the anticipation 预

期 of what comes next. if you have a problem in

thinking the next word, then just pause.

        4. Do not use the phrases, 'you know' or 'you know
what I mean'. These are quite horrible and serve no

useful function within spoken English. It is far better
        to pause.
