Health education

Introduction

In the past, health policy has

centered on services to meet the needs

of those who are ill. More recently

there has been growing interest in

preventing illness and promoting

good health. The

National Health System emphasis on the need to engage people in

their health and to shift from cure to prevention of illness through

health education to changing harmful behavior to healthful one.

Therefore it is important to understand the reasons behind behavior

that causes or prevents illness. This knowledge will help us select

the appropriate health education methods for the problem at hand.

In the practice of nursing as a community nurse educators, we

have engaged in a variety of health-teaching activities. We have a

wide range of experience in community with populations of diverse

ages and health states. These have provided us with evidence of the

need for heath education as well as a rich background in health

teaching from which to draw. We firmly believe that health

education is an essential part of the nurse’s role.
