There is a common belief by many people that it is difficult,
if not impossible, to consume theprotein we need when
following a vegan diet. This is simply, and factually, not the
case. Slick marketing campaigns by companies looking to
boost their sales have led us to believe that “proteinis king”
and that we need a large amount to be healthy, and even
more if we want to add muscle.
The USDA recommend daily allowance (RDA) for women
is 46 grams of protein daily; men need 56 grams of pro-
tein daily. For athletes, protein requirements increase – but
far less than most sports/fitness magazine ads would lead
you to believe you need. For example, a 150-pound endur-
ance athlete may need 82 to 95 grams of protein per day.
All of these amounts of protein are Protein propaganda
easily attained by eating a healthy and diverse vegan diet.
Need more proof? The list of vegan athletes is growing
every day, including Arizona’s own 4 time
Natural Bodybuilding Champion, Will Tucker. Will lives
in the Phoenix-metro area and owns WTF! (Will Tucker
Fitness). He is an author, Certified Fitness Trainer, and
speaker, as well as a regular contributor to Vegan Health
and Fitness Magazine.
