PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Welcome to fall. The temperatures are declining and fall rains have begun.
Hurricane Florence and our recent 8 ½” deluge in Hamden remind me that
SAVE THE DATE: AIA’s Disaster Assistance Program trains architect volunteers to provide
building safety inspections in disaster areas. I know of several Architects in
Connecticut who have received this training. The recent storms also reinforce
STAMFORD SHOWROOM the importance of resilience in design as well as the need to mitigate the
effects of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by
building energy use.
GRAND OPENING PARTY I noticed in Yale News that the University received international attention
earlier this month when students, faculty, staff, and alumni participated in the
OCTOBER 18 3pm-6pm Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco. Yale is testing the impact of
th
an internal price on emissions as part of the university’s sustainability efforts.
The program provides financial incentives to offices and departments across
147 SELLECK STREET campus for reducing the amount of carbon dioxide they produce. Way to go,
mother Yale!
STAMFORD CT Change is in the air; in our weather patterns and in our practices. Our strategic
planning committee, with our consultant Nancy Alexander, has been working
diligently collecting background for our retreat on October 20th. In the past
two weeks we held two town hall sessions that provided diverse ideas about
the challenges our practices need to confront. We identified and collected
members' concerns. Since then members of the committee have been
reaching out to a variety of stakeholders in the construction industry for their
insight. How best can AIA Connecticut serve its members in the future? This
is an open process and we welcome any input, from you our members.
Over 150 architects attended the 2018 AIA Connecticut Annual Conference &
Expo. It was a full day of seminars, two great keynote speakers, a filled exhibit
hall of manufacturers with terrific information about their products and
services, along with the cocktail reception where the 2018 AIA Connecticut
Design Awards winners were revealed. You won’t want to miss the Gala
scheduled for December 3rd at the Water View in Monroe. Invitations will
be mailed out shortly, but tickets are now available on the AIA Connecticut
website.
Just a reminder that “Find an Architect” is up and running on AIA Connecticut’s
web site. If you are not included in the search directory, please contact Maria
Nazarko at mnazarko@aiact.org and provide the profile information needed
to list you or your company in this valuable search engine.
Respectfully Submitted,
ARTHUR L. SANDERS, AIA
