“And yet, I cannot fall in love with him!” E fumed. “I simply

cannot. It wouldn’t be fair to encourage him. For a girl who isn’t yet

renamed cannot become a wife. It is the law of the land.”
“That is true,” replied Swie. “But hold back. One day you
will find a way out of your terrible situation, but only if you use your

        wits, not your anger.”
               The next morning,

E rose from her ducky sack
        as depressed as ever with

her fate in life, and made her
way to the kitchen, to start

        the fire and make her
        grandfather his tea of the

        day.
But instead of the usual sour greeting, her grandfather smiled

at her in an ingratiating way.
“I have been much too harsh with you,” he said, as if he meant

it. But E could see the glint of some other agenda in his eyes.
“So you’re finally going to treat me like a real granddaughter?”

she shot back, sarcastically. “After all these years, you suddenly
decide you’ve been too hard on me? Well, I don’t believe it. Not a

word. You never told me what happened to my dear parents, and you
have treated me like a slave since I was a toddler. I don’t trust you.

This is fake kindness. You are just as wicked as ever, for that is your
        nature.”
