E and Swie

        watched in disbelief as the

        prince emerged from the
        carriage (for Prince Jardon
it was) and handed a servant

his hat. He was a very fat
man, near middle age, with a

pompus air about him, and E
        disliked him immediately.

               “I thought princes
were young and handsome like Yaj,” she whispered toSwie. “But this

man is more like my grandfather than the princes in my imagination. Is
        he not?”

“He is indeed,” Swie agreed, “and just as corrupt.”
Prince Jardon walked up the path to their front door, and E’s

grandfather rushed to let him in.
“You have a dog,” PrinceJardon commented, as E’s

grandfather opened the door wide and bowed down until his head was
only a foot from the floor. “For I hear him barking.”

“Yes, your majesty. But it is not my dog. It is the faithful
companion of your future wife, my granddaughter. She is quite

enchanted with him, I can assure you, though he is blind and stupid as
        a stone.”

This time, Swie got angry, but E put a hand on his agitated
        back.
