“Oh grandfather!” E cried, using her reason to its full effect.

“Of course, I will marry this handsome prince! What village girl could

ever get such an offer? I am thrilled!”
Prince Jardon was well pleased, and he walked across the
room, and kissed his bride-to-be. And though E was repulsed, she

pretended she was ecstatic, and her grandfather smiled greedily. For
in the days of princes and kingdoms, men paid handsomely for wives,

and he knew he was about to become a very rich man.
“But there is a problem,” E added, using her best fake

        pouting voice.
“What do you mean?” Prince Jardon asked. “There can be no

problem here, for I have the power to remove any obstacle that stands
        in our way.”

“I am not renamed yet,” E explained. “And I cannot be, you
see. For my name has only one letter and I cannot scramble it into

something else that I like better . I’m sorry, for I can never marry,
though I long to be your wife.”

The prince was appalled and turned savagely on E’s
        grandfather.

“What is this?” he barked. “A young lady of this age who has
not yet renamed herself? It is an atrosity! Who caused this to happen?

        I must punish him immediately!”
               E’s grandfather bowed and groveled.
