ICD-10 coding system
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems,
10th Revision (known as "ICD-10") is a medical classification list for the coding of
diseases, signs and symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and
external causes of injury or diseases, as maintained by the World Health Organization.
In this coding system every health condition can be assigned to a unique category and
given a code, up to 6 characters long. Such categories can include a set of similar
diseases.
Thecodingsystem is used worldwideformorbidity and mortality statistics, reimbursement
systems and automated decision support in medicine.
The ICD is revised periodically and is currently in its 10th edition hence the name 10
coding system.
In India this coding this coding system was implemented in the year 2004. This coding
system is assigned at the time of discharge either by hospital staff or by the TPA.
