              RESEARCH PROJECTS

              Carcass classification
              The Carcass classification project has been completed and the next step is
              now  to apply for  an amendment of the regulations  of the  AGRICULTURAL

              PRODUCT STANDARDS  ACT,  1990  (ACT  No. 119 OF 1990). An exploratory
              meeting was held with Mr Rudi van der Westhuizen of SAMIC to enquire about
              the procedures.


              Livelihood of rural pig farmers in Western Cape
              Melissa Cupido’s  project at  the  University of Stellenbosch,  Improving the
              livelihood of pig farmers of commages in rural areas of Western Cape, is being

              funded and is running.


              African swine fever
              Dr Juanita van Heerden of the ARC-OVI at Onderstepoort is being partially
              funded for a project titled:” The Risk of African Swine Fever to Gauteng”.


              Antimicrobial resistance
              Dr Mokoele of the Veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort receives partial funding
              of a PhD project  on “The  prevalence, perceptions  and mitigation of

              antimicrobial resistance in pig farms of Gauteng province and surroundings in
              South Africa”. The Covid-19 lockdown stopped any progress of this project
              and possibly also the others.

              Bursaries

              A bursary was awarded to Ms Chantel Pennicott who will be doing a study at
              Baynesfield under supervision of Prof Rob Gous. Her study is titled Economic

              optimum nutrition of growing pigs at Baynesfield.

              Reports

              Dr Leana Janse van Rensburg of Onderstepoort submitted a PORCUS article
              titled “The occurrence of African swine fever in domestic pigs in South Africa”.
