Leaflets distributed to ASF outbreak areas

SAPPO, together with Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural
Development, created a series of Disease Control leaflets that are currently
being distributed to developing farmers in the various provinces. The leaflets
are also available for download on the SAPPO.org websites.

             There are nine different messages:
                 • Five checkpoints that farmers follow to avoid the spread of ASF
                 • Practicing good internal biosecurity on your farm
                 • Keeping pig areas hygienic
                 • How to practice access control on your farm
                 • How to correctly dispose of dead pigs
                 • What to do when feeding your pigs
                 • What to do when selling your pigs
                 • What to do when bringing new pigs onto your farm
                 • Why you should take ASF seriously

Each of the nine messages have been translated into seven different
vernaculars: English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, Venda, Sepedi, Sesotho and
             Setswana.

SA Pork’s Giving with Gratitude involvement with Chef Schools

Following the good relationships build with Chefs Schools all over the country,
SAPPO was approached to donate pork meat to the Chef Schools’
movement to prepare and serve meals for homeless and vulnerable hungry
             people during the lockdown period.

Most Chef Schools have adjusted their curriculum to incorporate a new
subject, i.e. low cost, nutritious meals prepared in mass quantities and served
by chef students in environmentally friendly ways to poor consumers.

A digital recipe and photo competition was also launched to the students of
30 chef schools to challenge the students to compile, prepare and
photograph an economical pork dish and to send their entries in digitally.
Ten x R200 Takealot Gift Vouchers are up for grabs to the 10 best entries. The
closing date for this students’ competition is 3 July.
