“Dallas Buyers Club”

The movie is a dramatic biography of an electrician-cowboy

named Ron Woodroof, who lives surrounded by the

excess of liquor, drugs, and sex. In 1985, he was

diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.

These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and

the U.S. was divided over how to combat the virus.

After an initial phase of denial, he does as much

research as he can about the disease and finds

out the most effective drug at the time it is only in

a clinical trial stage, urging him to take matters on his

own, tracking down alternative methods used around the world including

both legal and illegal. He gets a non-FDA approved cocktail of drugs that works, and

starts smuggling the medication for him and other HIV+ patients. Neglecting the

establishment, Woodroof joins forces with an unlikely band of renegades and

outcasts and established a hugely successful "buyers' club." When the government

finds out, they try to stop him. They shared fight for decency and recognition in a

unique story.

To develop a critical thinking of this movie, students must first identify their own

position and beliefs towards sensitive subjects the film addresses, namely

homosexuality, transgender individuals, religion, AIDS, ethics, drugs abuse, black

market - just to mention some – in order to be able to detect any interference that
