The Role of Cinema
in Today’s World
Even though one of the main goals of cinema ever since its invention has
been to entertain, cinema scope reaches far beyond such superficial task as it
constitutes a very important means in displaying information and situations bound to
stimulate critical thinking and to produce social awareness among the viewers.
In they study The Role of Cinema and the Effect of Educational Levels of
Politicians on Voting Attitude, Agocuk and Kececi sustain that “Cinema has the
feature of reflecting the social, political and cultural changes and of contributing to the
reconstruction of reality.” (2017). It reflects such changes as it incorporates new ways
of living and thinking, and it may even go back in time to convey a specific message.
For example, in educational aspects, many cinema works serve to illustrate a variety
of topics in history, science, technology, health and many more.
In the article, Five on Film: The Role of Cinema in 2017, Coutney Small of
Cinema Axis, expresses:
“In a time when the fear of the unknown threatens to divide us along political, racial,
and gender lines, it is important that audiences continue to seek out works outside of
their usual comfort zone”. Coutney Small
Such assertion entails a suggestion to the audiences to open their minds, and to
perform a deep review of the mass media message, cinema included, in order to
promote and achieve better changes for society improvement.
