Old South Derby
COS IM KOOL
by Michael Compton
Cos Im Kool ran to his name in the $72,215 Old South Derby at Delta Downs on May 31, winning the 350-yard test in a determined effort.
The 3-year-old gelding dueled throughout but maintained his cool, fighting off all challengers in the lane to post a narrow victory for owner John D. Henson and trainer Kenneth Weeks.
Ridden by Ricardo Hernandez Jr., Cos Im Kool contested the early lead with Sharks Jess Jumpin away from the gate. As that rival faded, Cos Im Kool faced a new challenger in Fancy Pants Heidi, who briefly took up the chase before dropping out of contention as well. Approaching the finish, Cos Im Kool fended off one more opponent in late-rallying Glas Fred to score by a head at the wire. Cos Im Kool stopped the timer in :17.488, earning a 93 speed index.
It was the initial stakes victory for Cos Im Kool, who improved his record to 6-3-2-1. The $36,108 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $63,008. Cos Im Kool finished second in his May 10 trial, beaten just a nose by Sharks Jess Jumpin. Bred in Louisiana by Richard Ortego, Cos Im Kool is out of Canterbury Park Derby winner Time For Wilena.
Runner-up Glas Fred (Paint Me Perry-Miss Game Tee) just missed in a game effort under Bobby Ransom for owner GIA Equine Center LLC and trainer Richard Lane. Corona Finish (Corona Cartel-Theslatesclean) and jockey Everardo Rodriguez bobbled at the break and closed strongly late to finish third for owner JP Quarter Horses and trainer Martin Trejo.

Vinton Stakes
APOLLITICAL HIGH
by Danny Camp
Apollitical High was the first place finisher in the $48,500 Vinton Stakes at Delta Downs on June 7.
On a beautiful evening, four brave souls stepped into the starting gate at Delta Downs. Apollitical
High had won his last two in a row, so he was the
odds on favorite. When the starter pushed the button, the gelding broke from the 3-post in last place. At the halfway point, it seemed it was all but lost as he was near the back of the field. With jockey David Alvarez aboard, Apollitical High showed grit and determination and crossed the line a head in front. They stopped the clock in :19.935 to earn an 87 speed index.
The three-year-old gelding earned the first place check worth $30,000, boosting his total bankroll to $97,731. He has now won his last three in a row for owner Rosendo Valdez and trainer Rosendo Valdez Jr. Apollitical High also won the Mardi Gras Derby in his previous out this year and was a finalist in the 2020 LQHBA Louisiana Million Invitational.
Leroy L. Fontenot Jr. bred Apollitical High out of unraced Toastem Honi. She has produced 100% winners from starters. Apollitical High is her first stakes winner.
Whos My Papa (Heza Fast Dash-Streakin Angelica) broke with the leaders and fought the good fight. He banked second place money for owner Alvaro Munoz and trainer Eric Long. Saul Ramirez was in the irons. Jess Sweet Time (One Sweet Jess- Track Shaker) was in third place under Juan Garcia Jr. for owners Roland Frederick, Cory Mouton
and Trey Ellis, who is also the trainer. The gelding won last year’s LQHBA Sale Juvenile Stakes and
was a runner-up in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile-G2. Jess Her Dream (Jess Louisiana Blue-In His Dreams) completed the order of finish. Ought To Go Tee & Shortstop Express were scratched.
Mother’s Day Stakes
EYEONDAPRIZE
by Michael Compton
Eyeondaprize scored her first stakes win in the $34,700 Mother’s Day Stakes at Delta Downs on May 31.
With rider Everardo Rodriguez in the irons, Eyeondaprize raced in fourth position early in the 350-yard event. With her eyes clearly on the prize, she flew past the early leaders in the lane en route to a powerful 1/2-length score over Sheza Freighttrain T. Eyeondaprize races for owner Rosendo Valdez and trainer Rosendo Valdez Jr. The brown filly stopped the timer in :17.403, good for a 95 speed index.
The $21,000 winner’s share increased her bankroll to $75,260, and improved her record
to 15-6-1-1. She was a finalist in the 2020 Billy Montgomery Stakes & Scoopies Leaving You Stakes. Bred in Louisiana by Daniel Trahan, Eyeondaprize is out of winner Good Game Meg, who was 2nd in the 2008 LQHBA Lassie Futurity-G2.
Sheza Freighttrain T (Freighttrain B-Cloning Around) and jockey Rolando Pina ran a big race
for 2nd after leading most of the trip. The multiple stakes winner and 2nd choice in the wagering is owned by Patrick Richardson and trained by Eric Long. The 3-year-old filly is a 6-time winner in her career. Lifeinthefastlanes (Jess Louisiana Blue- Pantherinthefastlane), with David Alvarez riding, dueled with the leaders throughout and held 3rd, just a nose behind Sheza Freighttrain T in second. The 4-year-old filly and odds-on favorite is a winner in eight of 12 starts for owners Jason Richards & Michael Leblanc and trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr. Until a 4th-place finish in her lone previous start this season, the brown filly had rattled off 6 consecutive wins, three of them in stakes races. Followed by Annas T Time (One Famous Brioni-T Storm TB), Black Shadow (One Sweet Jess-Only Sister) & VF My Favorite Chick (Favorite Cartel-Perrys Folly). Passionate Paris was scratched.
