Sam Houston Classic-G2
RJ LETS GET FISCAL
Fby Michael Compton
or trainer Mary Meza and her husband Juan
Carlos Meza, RJ Lets Get Fiscal’s game victory in the Sam Houston Classic-G2 will long be remembered. Mary trains and Juan Carlos owns
the 3-year-old gray gelding who provided his connections with their first ever graded stakes score.
Ridden by Agustin Silva, RJ Lets Get Fiscal raced to the front of the compact field of six at the start of the 440-yard event. He received pressure throughout from race favorite Jet Black Grace as those two
dueled to the finish. At the wire, it was RJ Lets Get Fiscal prevailing by a nose after a hard-fought run through the lane. Making his stakes debut in the Sam Houston Classic, RJ Lets Get Fiscal stopped the timer in a fast :21.826 and earned a speed index of 102.
“We are ecstatic,” said Mary Meza. “Lloyd Moreland trained RJ Lets Get Fiscal previously; we have just had him since December. He is so easy to train. We hauled in from Wichita Falls, which took
6 hours, but he just laid down in his stall and was not nervous at all. This is the first graded stakes win for me and my husband. We have a great team and jockey.”
The $34,200 winner’s share increased RJ Lets Get Fiscal’s bankroll to $73,942 and his record is 7-4-1-1. He was bred in Oklahoma by Ken & Reba George and is out of Chick With Speed, a 5-time winner and third in the 2008 Oklahoma Bred Derby-G3.
Jockey Juan Pulido just missed with favored Jet Black Grace (Jet Black Patriot-Thrill And Grace) who also received a 102 speed index. The stakes winner
is owned by Carlos Ponce & trained by Juan Diaz Jr. In third was Ontherocks (A Revenant-Stol A Bunny) under Raul Ramirez Jr. for owner Ware Racing and Ranching LLC & trainer Esteban Rubio. Followed by Won Famous Dash (Giorgino-Lil Famous Dash), Biden Record (Pool-Shesa Crazy Chick) & Hes Jess Dealin (Dealagame-Jess Marcy). Shockinglyfamous & Viva Le Don were scratched.

WL VAN HALEN

eturning to the site of his first win in stakes
company, Sam Houston Race Park, WL Van Halen tallied his fourth career stakes victory on May 20 in the $22,750 Colors of Houston Derby.
Guerras Racing Stables owns WL Van Halen, who now holds eight wins in 12 lifetime starts. The $13,195 payday from this event pushed the Paint gelding’s total earnings into six figures at $110,709. WL Van Halen’s other stakes triumph at Houston came last June 11 in the Colors of Houston Juvenile. The gelding also won last year’s runnings of the GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Stakes at Gillespie County Fair and the Colors of the Alamo Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Retama Park.
Gilberto Gonzalez trains WL Van Halen, who was making his debut out of 2023. He made a solid break from the 3 gate, was running second at the first call, then moved into the lead by a head going into
the final stretch. WLVan Halen and jockey Ali Rivera widened the gap down the stretch, winning the race by a full length. WL Van Halen finished the trip in :17.683 for a 99 speed index. He was a huge favorite at the betting window, going off at post time at 1-5 odds.
Charles Leggett bred WL Van Halen out of CL Trap Queen APHA, a 2014 mare who won three of her 15 starts during her competitive career.
Noe Rios trains the other two horses that hit
the board. Cowgirl Cartel APHA (Dash Master Jess QH-Camo Cowgirl) led early but finished second for Zackery Rios with Froylan Ramirez in the irons. WL You Aint No Cowboy APHA (Painted Turnpike APHA-Texas Fourwinds APHA) hit the board in third for Wade and Susan Leggett. Federico Borgas drew the riding assignment.
VP Double Down Dash APHA (Dos Poruno-GW Money Dash) and VP Country Smoke APHA (VP Smokey Wire-Country Danger) completed the field. Little Sonny scratched.

The May 21 Bucking Horse Sale Futurity was
just one of the many events during the final day of the World Famous Bucking Horse Sale at Miles City in Montana. The entire event is billed as the Cowboy Mardi Gras.
Eight two-year-olds lined up for the 250-yard Bucking Horse Sale Futurity.
One Fabulous Dynasty, ridden by Ezekiel Barron, was best away from the gate, jumping out on the lead.
Briefly falling to second place by 1/2-length to BHR Flashing Nickers at the top of the stretch, One Fabulous Dynasty prevailed at the wire.
Favored Y O Fifty Concerts broke outwardly and finished strongly, but couldn’t catch One Fabulous Dynasty, who beat the favorite by 3/4-lengths, stopping the timer in :13.831.
Robert Johnson trains One Fabulous Dynasty for owners Deanna Anderson and Casey Foster.
Johnson debuted One Fabulous Dynasty in the May 7 trials, where the colt nosed out Moon Em N Dash and qualified with the second fastest time.
Bob and Gary Johnson bred One Fabulous Dynasty in South Dakota from their homebred winning mare Diva Dynasty.
In addition to One Fabulous Dynasty, Diva Dynasty has produced one other starter and winner, multiple stakes-placed Hasta Be Relentless.
In her racing career, Diva Dynasty won two of four starts, incuding the South Dakota
Bred Futurity
Gerald Kaul’s homebred Y O Fifty Concerts (Fiftyshadeszofgrey-Concert Ticket) finished
in second place for jockey Shaunda Larsen. The bay gelding, trained by Jess Matt, was the fastest qualifier after winning his trial heat by 2-lengths.
Johnson also trains third-place finisher BHR Flashing Nickers (One Mean Eagle-BHR Guys Flash Me). Bred and owned by the Broken Heart Ranch and ridden by Larren Delorme, BHR Flashing Nickers ran second in her trial, which was her racing debut. In that race she finished 1/2-length behind the winner, but 6-lengths in front of the rest of the field.
Completing the order of finish were Come Together (Valiant Hero-One Corona At A Time) in fourth, followed by Eyesa Fast One (Hasta Be Fast-One Eye Opener), Moon Em N Dash (Brindis Por Cayenne-Dashmetothemoon), Shooter Zoom (Azoom-Gemmas Diamond), and Icon Doit (Texas Icon-Hawktomistic).
