                 A FAMOUS RIBBON
by Michael Cusortelli
Making just the second start of his 4-year-old season, Adrian Aleman’s A Famous Ribbon won the $58,157 Bank of America Grants Pass
Championship Challenge at Grants Pass Downs on Sept. 17.
A Famous Ribbon made his quarter-mile
trip in :21.099, breaking the previous 440-
yard Track Record of :21.239 set by CM Boom Shakalaka in the 2021 Bank of America Grants Pass Championship Challenge. Ali Rivera rode the gelded son of Champion One Famous Eagle for trainer Erasmo Soto.
A Famous Ribbon earned a 120 speed index, and his margin of victory was a head from fastest qualifier Jesstafiably Jess. The gelding was bred
in Oklahoma by Weetona Stanley, and he was purchased by Karla Diaz-Lopez for $30,000 at the 2020 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
A Famous Ribbon is out of Fast Prize Ribbon, a winning homebred daughter of Corona Cartel and a 1/2-sister to 2008 West Texas Futurity-G1 winner Fast Prize Zoom. His second dam is Heritage Place Futurity-G1 winner Fast First Prize, who was also
a finalist in the Texas Classic Futurity-G1. Raced in four states, A Famous Ribbon has won six of 12 races and the $26,752 winner’s share of the purse from his first stakes victory increased his bankroll to $93,348.
Jesstafiably Jess (One Sweet Jess-Fly Thru Time) was trained by Benito Curiel for owner Malon L. Cowgill and ridden by Jaime Lopez. The gelding won the 2019 Sun Downs Derby Challenge and Far West Futurity Consolation and was second in the 2020 Emerald Downs Championship Challenge.
First Moon Cat (Stray Cat-Yak Ity Yak Go) finished third, 1 1/4-lengths behind A Famous Ribbon, for owner Jeff Ray. Alex Anaya rode the homebred 7-year-old mare for trainer Hector Magallanes. First Moon Cat won the 2022 Pocatello Downs Distaff Challenge and was second in the 2021 Q-Racing Video Grants Pass Downs Distaff Championship.
Followed by Fast Movin Freight (Freighttrain B-Real Queen Like It), L Bar D Mistr Cartel (Majestic Cartel-Fly Misty Fly), Radar (A Revenant-Snow In My Corona), No Juans Fool (Fastnfierce-Juan Full Corona), Newport Guy (Kiddy Up-Wave Babe), Dr Tool (Kiss My Hocks- Where Eagles Soar), and disqualified from 5th
to last was Messanger (Favorite Cartel-Cupids Special Fly).
PRETTY SWEET JESS
by Tracy Gantz
When Pretty Sweet Jess won the Sept. 24 Canada Cup Futurity-RG3 at Century Downs, she was completing a double. She and Noble Rearing, winner of the Canada Cup Derby, have the same connections, being owned by Jerry Stojan and Kevin Lyons, trained by William Leech, and ridden by J.B. Botello.
Pretty Sweet Jess, who went off as the 7-2 second choice, broke in fifth. She put on a furious charge at the end of the 400-yards to score by three-quarters of a length. Her time of :19.762 was a New Track Record.
Pretty Sweet Jess was winning her fourth consecutive race, a string that began with a victory in the Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge. Stojan purchased Pretty Sweet Jess for $17,000 at the 2022 Los Alamitos Equine Sale from Veronica Gail Kawananakoa, who bred the filly in California.
Pretty Lethal, the dam of Pretty Sweet Jess, has produced three starters, all winners, including stakes winner Easily Lethal and stakes-placed Pretty Lethal Eagle.
Barry and Janice Sather’s homebred Miss Fancy Nancy (Big Lew-Singles Cruise) finished second for jockey D.I. Benitez and trainer Misael Moreno. The filly earlier ran second in the 2023 Evergreen Park Juvenile Challenge.
Fired (Fly Thru The Fire-Ruths Chris), also owned by Stojan and Lyons and trained by Leech, finished third. Ricardo Moreno piloted the gelding, who is still a maiden.
Completing the field were Bitterroots Wagon (JD Wagon Boss-Bitterroot Corona), Winkins Wagon Boss (JD Wagon Boss-Winkin Dynasty), O Lets Be First (First Timber-Lets Get Going), Hez Hott Ur Nott (Obsessed With Corona-Im Hott Ur Nott), St Paddy 109 (KVN Corona-See Me Do It Too), and Timbers Beauty (First Timber-Burners Beauty). DJ Bright Ruby was scratched.
NOBLE REARING
by Tracy Gantz
Noble Rearing made his racing debut in his native California, but he has competed for most of his career in Canada. His most recent victory came in
the Sept. 24 Canada Cup Derby at Century Downs. Sent away as the odds-on favorite and piloted
by J.B. Botello, Noble Rearing broke on top and led throughout the 400 yards. He scored by a 1/2-length
in :19.826. Noble Rearing was the fastest qualfier from the Sept. 10 trials.
William Leech trains Noble Rearing for owners Jerry Stojan and Kevin Lyons. The colt won the 2022 Canada Cup Futurity-RG3 and has placed in two other stakes. Stojan bought Noble Rearing from breeder Dr. Ed Allred for $36,000 at the 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
Allred bred Noble Rearing from Sweet TR, who raced for Allred and won the 2014 Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos. The mare has produced five winners in six starters, including stakes- placed Hubba Hubba. Noble Rearing’s third dam, Elans Special, won the 1987 All American Futurity.
Buckey Stockwell trains 2nd-placed Northfork Boss (JD Wagon Boss-Northfork Babe) and owns
the gelding with Delton Gehring and breeder Glenn Willis. O.A. Hernandez rode Northfork Boss, winner of the 2022 Alberta Bred Futurity-G3 and Sales Stakes Futurity. Third-placed Professor Gee (Fly Thru The Fire-Bemused) has the same connections as the winner, owned by Stojan and Lyons and trained by Leech. Ridden in this race by Ricardo Moreno, Professor Gee earlier this year won the All Canadian Derby. Followed by Eyemadashin (Dashin By All-Red Eye Jess), Heza Majestic Hero (Majestic Cartel-Weeds In My Roses), Tulsa Timber (First Timber-Mars Move), Ms Clara (Comanche Moon-Im Jesses Lucky Girl), Kari L Cartel (Corona Cartel-For Your First Lady), and Appreciate (Ivory James-Enjoy The Corona).
