CHICKS FIRST FLASH
by Tracy Gantz
Chicks First Flash is special to Melinda Roche of Five Livestock Company because she bred and raised him. The bay gelding has developed into
a talented runner, adding the $41,982 John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Championship Challenge on Aug. 13 to his earlier victory in the Fred Scane Handicap. He also finished second in the Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2.
In the 350-yard John Deere Juvenile Championship Challenge, Chicks First Flash broke well from the rail for jockey Armando Cervantes. He reached the front early and motored home to score by a 1/2-length in :17.804.
Monty Arrossa trains Chicks First Flash for Roche, who owns the gelding with Steve Wright. Roche bred Chicks First Flash from First Prize Chicks, a stakes winner also trained by Arrossa. The mare has produced two winners from three starters, including stakes winner Chicks Dashin Bandit. The third dam is Broodmare of the Year First Prize Dash.
Jose Flores trained second-place Famous Miss Kitty (Apollitical Jess-One Famous Lady) and third- place Imm Born To Fly (Apollitical Spirit-Flash N The Boys). Erasmo Gasca rode Famous Miss Kitty for owner/breeder Johnny Trotter, and Cruz Mendez piloted Imm Born To Fly for owner/breeder M & M Racing Stables. Famous Miss Kitty was coming off a maiden victory, and Imm Born To Fly most recently was third in the Fred Scane.
A Revenant Lady (A Revenant-Famous
Cartel Lady), J La Sultana (Docs Best Card-
Apollo Snowbound), Jettin Gigi (KVN Corona-
Jet Takeoff), The Train Station (Freighttrain B-Summers Last Gift), Fired Up For This 1 (Corona Cartel-Lady Perry On Fire), Reminder (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose), and Alternative Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Dinastia Tol Brz) completed the order of finish.

SECRET SUCCESS
by Tracy Gantz
Secret Success made it three wins in a row by capturing the $25,000 California Breeders’ Freshman Fillies Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 30. Breaking on top for jockey Armando Cervantes, Secret Success battled for the lead with odds-on favorite Navaja. Secret Success, the 9-5 second choice, was never headed and pulled away from Navaja approaching the wire to score by 3/4-length in :17.908 for 350 yards, earning an 84 speed index. Secret Success initially met Navaja the first time both of them raced on April 2 in a maiden event at Los Alamitos. With a lot of bumping,
as can happen with unraced horses, Navaja won while Secret Success finished fifth. Secret Success ran second her next time out, then hopped a bit at the start when fourth in her third outing. But she returned to break her maiden May 28 and added a sharp allowance victory June 19.
Brenda Figueroa, daughter of the late Champion trainer Blane Schvaneveldt, owns Secret Success, and her husband, Roman, trains the filly. Hector Jaramillo bred Secret Success in California from winner Deep Creek Bobbie. Secret Success is the mare’s first foal.
Jesus Nava’s homebred Navaja (Walk Thru Fire-Jess Flashee) finished second. Jose Nicasio rode the filly for trainer Felix Gonzalez. Navaja qualified for the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 and Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity-G2, running unplaced in both finals.
Bryan Candanosa piloted Reminder (Favorite Cartel-Remember Me Rose) to third for owner Simmons Racing and trainer Monty Arrossa. Reminder finished fourth and third in her two previous races.
Completing the field were Fire Wall (Seperate Interest-Sex On Fire), Corona De Crystal (Excecutive Cartel-Corona Paola), La Tarahumara Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Strict), and Sentauro Image (Fast Prize Cartel-City Image). Corona Rose was scratched.
CA Brds.’ Freshman Stakes
SPACE FLIGHT
by Tracy Gantz
Dr. Ed Allred won his second consecutive $25,000 California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes on July 30, the first of two California Champion Nights at Los
Alamitos. Space Flight this year followed Vamoosing in 2021. Both are homebreds for Allred.
When the gate opened, Space Flight immediately went to the lead with Smokin Hot Fire in second. About midway through the 350 yards, Space Flight and jockey Jonathan Roman put that rival away, and Space Flight scored by an easy 1 1/4-lengths as the 7-5 favorite in :17.885.
Scott Willoughby trains Space Flight for Allred. The gelding had started twice prior to the California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes, winning a maiden race and running second in an allowance race.
Allred purchased the Thoroughbred Window
To Heaven, Space Flight’s fourth dam, for $80,000
in 1990 and has shepherded the family ever since.
He bred Window To Heaven’s granddaughter, the Thoroughbred Celestial Being, to Separatist and got Quarter Horse winner In Another World, the dam of Space Flight. In Another World has produced 4 winners from 7 starters, including stakes-placed Transcend.
Mr Secret Cartel (Mr Ease Cartel-Secret Forest), owned by Margarito Farias, and trained by Jorge Farias, and ridden by Oscar Peinado, finished second. The gelding had won two of five previous starts.
Why Not Up (Kiddy Up-Ynot Win), also owned and bred by Allred and trained by Willoughby, ran third with Jesus Ayala in the irons. The gelding had won one of two starts before this race, that victory coming in a dead heat.
Completing the field were Smokin Hot Fire (Walk Thru Fire-Haute Cartel), Who Kares (Favorite Cartel-Remember Who), Lisbon Crystal (Fast Prize Cartel-Walk Thru Crystal), John Grey (Seperate Interest-Chics On Fire), and Alfonso (Fly Thru The Fire-Toby Tot).
