ymphette’s victory in the $25,000 California
Breeders’ Debutante Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 31 was one of several top efforts by offspring of the broodmare Nymph, a multiple stakes-winning homebred for Dr. Ed Allred. Nymph was represented by four starters over California Champions weekend. Frivolous won the Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG1, stakes winner Monopolist finished second in
the Spencer L. Childers California Breeders’ Championship Handicap-RG1, and Nevada Charles ran third in the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG2.

a Special One is a classic example of a horse on
the improve. He has now put together three consecutive victories at Los Alamitos, including the $25,000 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders’ Stakes on July 30.
Jockey Jose Nicasio has ridden Da Special One
in his last four starts, resulting in three wins and a narrow second. Nicasio got the gelding out of the gate perfectly in the Jens List Memorial. Da Special One flew to the front, drifted out a little, and still scored wire-to-wire by 3/4-length in :19.796 for 400 yards. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted the geldings total lifetime earnings to $47,274.
Attending the races with his father and brother, owner Alfredo Alonzo celebrated in the winner’s circle. Jaime Gomez trains Da Special One for Alonzo. The sorrel gelding did not win in three starts at two, but broke his maiden in his initial 2022 outing. He added two allowance victories prior to the Jens List Memorial.
Hector Padilla bred Da Special One in California from Da One. The mare has produced nine winners in 13 starters, including three other stakes winners and two stakes-placed runners.
