Jess Dealin broke her maiden in the trials to the All American Futurity and qualified fifth fastest overall. The sorrel filly began her freshman season with a fifth-place finish in the trials to the Ruidoso Futurity.
In those, she came out of the 5-hole slowly and got into some bump- ing with her foes. She improved from eighth to finish fifth but did not qualify. Next were the trials to the Rainbow Futurity, with a similar result. The filly broke tardy from 8-hole and slowly improved her posi- tion from eighth to fifth.
Next came the All American Futurity trials. Jess Dealin came out of the 7-hole and received the second call at the break. She quickly took control and was on top by 1/2-length at the first call. She held that margin through the top of the stretch, and then kicked it over the line 3/4-lenghts to the good. Jess Dealin comes into the All American Futurity finals with the least amount of money of all, but she has a win and the fifth fastest overall qualifying time. She is bred and owned by Pete A. Scarmardo and trained by John Stinebaugh. Francisco Calderon was aboard for the trip.
KJ Desparado comes into the All American Futurity-G1 with 3 wins. The gelding finished 2nd in his 1st start in the April 6 AQRA Turf Paradise Spring Futurity trials. He qualified and received a hard bump at the break in the finals. That horse was disqualified, and KJ Desparado finished 4th. He next went wire-to-wire in his Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial, scoring by 2 1/4-lengths. In the finals, he hit twice with foes on each side and was 6th in the bumpy event. He then won his trial to the Rainbow Futurity-G1 with a neck victory despite being bumped twice again. He qualified to the finals and was once again bumped on both sidesand crossed the wire in 7th.
In the last race on day 1 of the trials to the All American Futurity-G1, KJ Desparado was again involved in a bit of bumping, but the start was deemed good for all and this time he took a wire-to-wire 3-length victory. He came out of the 9-hole first, with a 1-length lead at the 1st call, 2-lengths at the top of the stretch, and 3-lengths at the wire. His clocking tops the ladder from day 1 and he is the sixth fastest overall qualifier. Jockey Adrian Ramos has been aboard in all but one race. . KJ Desparado was bred by John and Kathy Lee’s L&L Land & Cattle, is owned by John W. Lee, Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares, and conditioned by Wesley T. Giles.
